DIY SOS: The Big Build

Etex have donated plasterboard produced by its Siniat brand to Getaway Girls, a Leeds-based charity who campaign for young women and girls, and will be featured on the BBC One series ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’.

The donation will support the BAFTA award winning team at DIY SOS, along with volunteers, to construct a new purpose-built timber frame headquarters for the charity. The project will include a multi-purpose space, creche, music/media studio, counselling rooms, office spaces, a full kitchen as well as a garden area and car park for visitors.

The charity’s work is needed now more than ever, but its existing facilities are no longer fit for use and the lack of space is hindering their abilities to support the young girls and women of Leeds.

With the DIY SOS project, Getaway Girls will be able to resume their work to an even higher level than before as they support many more girls and young women through counselling and championship, as well as creating opportunities for creativity, learning and adventure.

Flavia, CEO of Getaway Girls said: “At Getaway Girls we have been helping girls and young women in Leeds to have happy, safe and fulfilled lives for the last 30 years. We help them to build confidence, create opportunities to try new activities, build friendships and, most importantly, have fun!”

Young women and girls face challenges everyday such as bullying, mental health struggles, discrimination and domestic abuse. It’s charities like Getaway Girls that empower women to face these daily challenges and ensure that they feel safe and empowered.

Melanie Davies, market manager and head of marcomms, added: “Getaway Girls is such an honourable charity that works tirelessly to empower young women and girls to face inequality. We hope that our donation helps to support the development of a functional space for the charity to continue their much needed, impactful work. It was a no-brainer to partner with such a worthy charity that aligns closely with our values as a business, as we strive to put the wellbeing of our team at the heart of everything we do.” The new ground-up development will support the charity in offering help to many more girls and young women. The project will be delivered in limited time and relies completely on the generosity of the local community of tradespeople and suppliers. It will be aired on BBC One in DIY SOS: The Big Build.
